Over 1,000 cherry blossom trees line Ueno Park’s main walkway, creating an image of pink clouds above the heads of visitors during hanami (cherry blossom viewing), between late March to early April. This breathtaking sight is one of the reasons Ueno Park attracts more than ten million visitors a year, making it Japan’s most popular city park.

The Significance of Ueno Park

One of the earliest Western style public parks in Japan, Ueno Park offers more to visitors than just a relaxing stroll. Ueno Park was formerly a part of Kaneiji Temple grounds, which was built in the northeast of Edo Castle to protect the city from evil. Its sprawling grounds now house many temples, shrines, museums and zoos.
